One hundred and thirteen iron steps later and I was nearly at the top. My lungs were burning, and my legs had gone just shrieking in pain to full-on death metal screamo. The pounding footsteps had stopped before I even made it halfway up, and I had heard Reed shouting at whoever it was to “open the door and give up.” To my relief, she wisely decided to wait for me, and as she came into view of my light, I saw her standing under another trapdoor with her gun held at the ready.

“Took you long enough,” she hissed at me. I briefly considered throwing her down the stairs, but everything was being recorded, and more importantly I was too tired.

“Whoever it was is still up there. I couldn’t get a good look at him through the holes in the floor, but I saw him move around to the other side.” She pointed to a dark spot several feet away where something was blocking the light from coming through the holes.

“Don’t . . .” I wheezed. “Trap . . .”

“Yeah, I’d say they’re trapped alright,” Reed said, looking up. “Watch my back.”

“No!”

But it was too late. Reed threw open the trap door and sprang up the stairs like a tiger, gun drawn, shouting, “FBI, freeze!”

I scrambled up the stairs with all the grace and speed of an asthmatic housecat with two broken legs, and tried to grab her and pull her back down. But my hand missed, and she crept fully up and out of the trap door. I braced myself for the sound of more gunshots, or the thunk of knives hitting flesh as Reed threw herself into whatever trap was waiting for her.

But there was nothing. I looked up and saw Reed just standing there, looking confused. I peeked my own head carefully through the trapdoor.

The lighthouse was empty.
